GodSmack does it again

Following up a highly successful debut album is always difficult to do. Expectations are always high, and critics are harder to please. Yet, Godsmack pulls through nicely with their sophomore release, "Awake." The song "Sick of Life" starts the album off, slowly fading into some heavy guitars and building with a scream full of angst. Even just during that first twenty seconds, it is easy to tell that "Awake" will rock.

"Awake" was written during the time Godsmack was on the road over the past few years. Songs such as the instrumental "Vampires" were written as far back as 1997. The album is well rounded with hard hitting tracks like "Sick of Life" and the title track, "Awake" as well as softer, more tribal sound as in "The Journey", which is the brief intro to "Spiral" where heavy guitars are added to the tribal sound. Overall it works to create a truly mesmerizing feel.

With this release, Godsmack does very well by keeping true to their following and rocking it just like they've done before. They even throw in some new sounds to keep it interesting.

OVERALL SCORE: 9/10
