Umoja/Unidad 2001

by Henry O. Ritter
Assistant Director of Admissions

The annual overnight visit program for newly admitted multicultural students took place on March 25-27. More formally called Umoja/Unidad, which stands for unity in Swahili and Spanish respectively, the program hopes to encourage the accepted students with African American, Native American and Latino American family backgrounds, to visit and enroll in the Class of 2005. The main objective of the program is to give newly admitted multicultural students a chance to connect with the current multicultural students and to see what campus life is like.

This year eleven students participated in Umoja/Unidad. They were hosted by current students that live on campus, some of whom attended the program when they were high school seniors. Usually, the interaction with current students is the most meaningful part of the visit. That was true again this year. The visiting students most appreciated the time spent with current students, in the classroom, sharing meals and attending social events.
