WPI men's basketball coach Ken Kaufman was recently elevated to First Vice-President of the National Association of Basketball Coaches, a prestigious position in the organization. The appointment sets up Kaufman to assume presidency of the highly respected organization next year.
The board announced the new officers just before the national championship game between Duke and Arizona. At next year's Final Four tournament in Atlanta, Kaufman will take over as president. Roy Williams of Kansas was appointed to president of the college basketball organization this year.
Past presidents include Dean Smith (UNC), John Thompson (Georgetown), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), and Mike Jarvis (St. John's). Current big-name coaches that will be members of the board below Kaufman include Tubby Smith (Kentucky) and Tom Izzo (Michigan State).
Although it was his 10th year serving on the NABC, he has been coaching at WPI for over three decades. This past season was his 26th as head basketball coach, preceded by six years as an assistant.
