Teeter Tottering for Charity

by Elizabeth Archambault
Class of 2003

Beginning Friday, April 20, 2001, at noon, Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Gamma Delta will kick off their 8th Annual Teeter-Totter-a-thon. For 120 consecutive hours until Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at noon, the brothers and sisters will be teeter tottering to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Shriners Children's Hospital. No matter what the weather is like or what time of day or night, they will be out on the WPI Quad raising funds for these two children's health organizations.

Last year $3000 was raised. This year, they have a $4000 goal. Understandably, they need help in reaching this goal. Donations will be accepted on-site and any help the community is able to give is greatly appreciated. A raffle will also be held and tickets may be purchased on site as well as in the Campus Center. Prizes will include numerous gift certificates and home entertainment equipment.

On Friday, April 20, 2001, Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Gamma Delta will be hosting a SOAP event during which there will be a Guerilla Improv show with food on the Quad afterwards.

In addition a volleyball tournament will be held on Monday and Tuesday during Teeter-Totter. Teams of up to six people may sign up in the Campus Center this week to participate. The team winner of the tournament will receive a cash prize. There is a $20 entry fee per team with all proceeds benefiting the two charities.

Juvenile Diabetes has affected and infected close to 1 million families and friends. In addition, it is estimated that every year 30,000 people are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes; over 13,000 of those are children. Those that have diabetes have a life expectancy 15 years less than those who do not have this disease. Living with diabetes is not an easy task, especially for children. With your help, we hope to aid in funding further research and to help those who are ill and in desperate need of care and intervention.

In addition, the other charitable organization, the Shriners Hospital for Children in Springfield, MA, provides free treatment to children with orthopedic, burn, and spinal cord injuries. Both organizations provide so much for children, and they must continue to receive donations to provide the services they offer.

Lambda Chi Alpha and Alpha Gamma Delta have appreciated your past help to their fundraiser, and they hope for your continued generosity.
