A small number of people have returned copies to SGA, but not enough to be a major concern for our student government. We have decided not to publish the petition for the simple matter that we do not have the originator's name. If a serious discussion about SGA is needed, we will be more than willing to serve as the medium for this discussion, but we would like to know more about the issue before blindly taking a side. As a newspaper, we have an obligation to give people a chance to voice their opinions and are open to suggestions regarding what you feel Newspeak can do to serve you more completely.
The editors of Newspeak have always been and continue to be willing to accept submissions from the WPI community and it is our obligation to print information for the benefit of our readers. However in the case of the petition, we did not feel that it was appropriate to publish, without knowledge of the circumstances which lead someone to distribute hundreds of these to many mailboxes on campus. It is not our intention to openly attack SGA, but if someone comes forward and provides us with their reasons for this action, it is our job to foster any resulting discussion. Obviously we could protect the identity of all parties involved.
On a lighter note, we would like to thank the entire 1994 editorial board of Newspeak for all that they've done as we begin a new year. We hope to develop staff in the near future and consistently publish a quality newspaper. Your input will be very helpful, so drop something into our box (2700), stop by our office, or e-mail us (newspeak@wpi).
