Icecats shred Baby B's in overtime

The Worcester Icecats skated off with a well-fought overtime victory against the Providence Bruins on Monday night (the 9th) in front of 7,746 fans, raising their overall record to 12-22-8.

The game started off disastrously in the first period, with the Icecats sinking into a seemingly inescapable 3-0 hole. Icecat goalie Les Kuntar just couldn't hold against the Bruins offense, and was replaced with goalie Wayne Cowley after allowing 3 lucky goals (one of which was the result of an unfortunate screen by an Icecat defenseman).

After the first intermission, however, the Cats came out fighting and forced Providence into defense mode against a fired-up Worcester offense. The Icecats finally scratched the scoreboard 6:59 into the second period when defenseman Roy Mitchell beat Providence goalie Daniel Berthiaume, connecting a one-timer pass from leftwing David Haas. A minute and a half later, Worcester cut the Bruins lead to 1 as Icecats Captain, John Carter, scored on a one-on-one rush, beautifully faking out Berthiaume. Struggling to hold their tenuous lead, the Bruins fell again to the Icecats onslaught at 12:54 with a game-tying goal from center Denis Chalifoux, assisted by Haas and rightwing Blair Atcheynum. Atcheynum's assist extended his consecutive game point streak to 10 games, a current Icecat record.

The third period developed into a fierce battle as both teams fought to grab the lead. Halfway through the period, however, it was Icecat defenseman Terry Virtue who gave Worcester the lead for the first time, on a goal assisted by Chalifoux and Haas. Unfortunately, Worcester's advantage did not last long. A few minutes later, Providence defenseman Bill Armstrong finally beat Cowley, tying the game once again at 4-4. Neither team could score in the remaining time left in the third period, and the game was forced into a five minute sudden-death overtime period.

Ultimately, it was Worcester leftwing Cal McGowen who scored the game-winning goal for the Icecats, assisted once again by Haas, finishing arguably the Cats most dramatic comeback yet.

The Cats also clinched all three of the games stars: 3-Wayne Cowley (28 saves), 2-David Haas (3 assists), and 1-Denis Chalifoux (1 goal, 1 assist).
