This is intended to provide information on the proposed sites, some of the criteria for developing these sites, as well as a survey which everyone is asked to return. While the majority of students on campus will most likely not be around by the time the center is completed, it is important to spend a few minutes on this issue. Historically, WPI students have been interested in a place where they might go to relax and socialize with one another as well as the faculty and staff. In The Two Towers, which gives an excellent overview of WPI's past, there is a quote from 1908 which states "It is an earnest hope that some suitable building will be erected to bring students together at least once a week."
Three years ago, an open campus meeting was held in Perreault Hall to discuss the creation of the center. The hall filled to capacity and students were sent to other rooms to watch the talk on WPI-TV. Newspeak has been behind the center as long as we can remember and has watched student interest drop as the groundbreaking grows closer. But this is just the time when our input is needed. Even though many of us might not see the center, as students, we obviously have insight which will benefit the WPI students of tomorrow. So don't think of the two parts of the update as homework, instead use it to benefit others.
Every summer, WPI alumni come back to the campus to see the changes that have been made and many of them donate to the school. Since we already pay our share of tuition, this is one thing which we can all do to improve the quality of life. It would reflect badly on us all if through our apathy, a student center was built which did not meet the needs of students, so give this survey some consideration or write to one of the members of the committee but please don't just throw this chance away!
