Beyond the Farm
For the week preceding this Saturday, January 28th, 1995, here's a review of what happened Beyond the Farm:
Two suicide bombers killed 19 Israelis and injured 63 others in a truck stop at the Beit Lid junction near Natanya, Israel Jan 22nd. The second bombing was deliberately timed to injure those rushing to help the first victims; Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility. The Israeli government sealed the occupied territories Jan 23rd, with prime minister Yitzhak Rabin implying that he would favor permanently separating Palestinians and Israelis.
President Clinton gave his State of the Union address Jan 24th. The 80-minute speech focused on creating a "New Covenant" between the Federal Government and citizens, with mutual responsibilities. While making new calls for lobby reform, campaign finance reform, and a higher minimum wage, he also reiterated his call from last year for welfare reform and vowed not to allow last year's crime bill to be repealed by the new Congress. Governor Christine Todd Whitman (R-New Jersey) gave the Republican response, calling for a larger role for state and local government.
Contract with America legislation made progress this week. President Clinton signed the Congressional Accountability Act into law Jan 23rd, which requires Congress to live by the laws it passes. The House passed by a 300-132 margin a version of the Balance Budget Amendment Jan 26th which would require a balanced budget by 2002 but does not require a three-fifths majority to pass new taxes. Finally, the Senate passed the Unfunded Mandates Bill 86-10 Jan 27th, which would end Federal requirements on states which are not backed up by funding.

The O.J. Simpson trial opened Jan 24th. Judge Lance Ito nearly ended television coverage after the Prosecutor's opening statement because an alternate juror was inadvertently shown on Court-TV. The Defense released a new witness list Jan 25th which the prosecution would like time to investigate.
