Set in Martinique in 1931, director Euzhan Palcy paints a rich portrait of native life under French Colonial rule, filtered through the coming-of-age of a bright, sweetly opportunistic black boy learning to reconcile the values of his shanty-town roots with the education opportunities that beckon him to the big city. Dead Can Dance - Toward the Within will be shown the following evening as a special presentation by the WPI Fine Arts Committee. This is the only New England screening of a live performance of Dead Can Dance captured on film by Ron Friske (Baraka).
