Appalachia in Worcester

It is that time of the year again when the Newman Club sponsors its annual Spring Break project "Appalachia in Worcester." The dates for the project are March 13th and 14th. Every year a group of WPI students give up two days of spring vacation to work on projects for the homeless of the City of Worcester in conjunction with Youville House, a temporary, emergency shelter for homeless families. For the last ten years, Youville House has provided a variety of crucial services for families, especially battered women and their children, who have lost their housing.

Today at Youville, the average "long" stay is as long as six months. One of the components of Youville care for homeless, battered women and their families is their after-care for these people. Youville tries to move their clients into permanent housing with on-going support and services to help them make a transition to normal living conditions. This year, Youville House has asked that our Appalachia in Worcester project be centered on getting vacant apartments fit for these women and their families. In this way, the clients of Youville House can restart their lives in normal living conditions with on-going support services and care. So if you are interested in helping this worthy cause, please contact Susan Roosa (Box 2500) or Becky Prince (Box 947) as soon as possible. The group is limited to 40 students. Sign up now and give to people of our city some of your talents.
