Jazz announcements

The International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE) will hold a Jazz Combo and Jazz Choir Festival in Alden Memorial on Wednesday, March 22. The WPI Jazz Group, the collective name for the Institute's three jazz performance ensembles, is hosting the event, which is expected to draw jazz musicians from at least 10 Massachusetts high schools. From 3 to 8 p.m., student instrumental ensembles will perform in Spaulding Recital Hall on Alden's lower level, while jazz choirs will perform upstairs in the Great Hall. Three adjudicators will tape their comments in each location.

"Given the high visibility of the WPI Jazz ensembles and the fact that the Jazz Worcester Festival was centered here for five years, it is not surprising that the Institute has been asked to host this prestigious festival," says Richard G. Falco, director of jazz studies and founder of the Jazz Worcester Festival. Falco has served as an adjudicator for the IAJE and the Massachusetts Music Educators Association. "It is very likely that the Jazz Group will host this event each year, as Alden Hall has been deemed ideal for the festival by members of the IAJE Mass. chapter board. "The event is free and open to the public.

On Monday, March 27, a Big Band Bash will be held at 8 p.m. in Alden Memorial. The event, sponsored by the WPI JazzGroup, is a joint jazz concert featuring the WPI Stage Band and the Bentley College Jazz Workshop. Admission is free.

The Jazz Club jams at noon each Monday during Term D in the Wedge.
