Softball (1-7)

The softball team returned from Florida last Monday on a high note, having won their last game on the trip to break into the win column for 1995. It was an "eye opening" trip according to coach Barbara Quinn as they played some of the top teams from all around the country.
A week ago Friday, the Engineers played Jamestown College and Penn State-Behrend and were shutout 13-0 and 14-0 respectively. The next day WPI was trying to salvage the trip and leave on a positive note when they played St. Ambrose University and Teikyo-Post University. They lost the first game to St. Ambrose 6-0 and won the second 6-5 behind the pitching duo of freshman Kerry Mallon (Ashland, MA) and senior Jen DeLuca (Stoughton, MA) who relieved Mallon in the seventh inning to pick up the win. In the game, junior Tracy Langis (Westport, MA) and senior Renee Cusson (Chicopee, MA) both went 3 for 3 with one RBI apiece. Langis had a double and Cusson had a triple. The big hit in the game was delivered by freshman Margaret King (Cheektowaga, NY) who hit a one out, bases loaded single in the bottom of the seventh to drive in the winning run.

Baseball (3-4)

As the baseball team returned from their southern trip, there seems to be real optimism for this year's squad on the prospect of turning things around. They have already matched last season's win total with plenty of baseball yet to be played. They also played well and returned with a second place trophy from the Greensboro Tournament they played in on their trip. This year's team may be young, but the attitude is positive and upbeat.
In the Greensboro College Tournament, WPI opened up against the host and won a close one 9-8. Freshman Guy Miller (W. Barnstable, MA) won the game in relief and also drove in the winning run. In the next game versus Newport News WPI pulled out another close one 7-6. Transfer student Nate Cote (N. Attleboro, MA) picked up the win in relief. In the third game of the opening round, WPI played cross-city rival Clark and pounded them 14-3 behind a strong pitching performance from junior Matt Whitten (Gray, ME). In the championship game, despite batting .429, the Engineers were beaten by Guilford College 11-10.
On the last game of the trip, WPI stopped at Lynchburg to play them again and lost 29-7. For the trip, Miller had 11 RBIs to go with his one win. Sophomore Tim Doyle (Torrington, CT) had 10 RBIs. Two freshmen had strong trips at the plate as Aviv Kaufmann (Shrewsbury, MA) and Scott Townsend (Hollis, ME) batted .625 and .438 respectively.
