Students, faculty are among recent prize winners and presenters

John Sgammato, a candidate for a master's degree in biotechnology, won second prize ($250) in the Student Paper Competition of the New England Water and Environment Association. Sgammato's paper was titled "In-house Biological Destruction of a Manufacturing Waste." The conference was held in January in Boston.

Milton Wright '95 was the co-author (with Mohamed Dembele) of "A Study of Linear Industrial Customers With Serious Harmonic Resonance." The paper earned honorable mention in the Student Paper Competition at the Jan. 31 IEEE Power Engineering Society Winter Meeting in New York.

Several students presented papers at the STS Meeting and Tenth National Technological Literary Conference in early March in Arlington, Va. The presenters were: Michael V. Caprio Jr. '97 and Benjamin Bennett '96: "Project Aegis: Roleplaying an STS Curriculum"; Graduate student David Kingsland, Charles McTague '95 and Benjamin Kibler: "Cognitive and Learning-Style Biases in SAT Performance: When Does the SAT Work and What Can It Tell You?"; Maria Salvati '96, Jeffrey Modderno '96 and Robert Tonning '95: "Drawing on Local History to Motivate Science Study: the Quabbin Reservoir Controversy"; and Thomas Russell '95, Beverly Koch '97 and Alison Possas '97 "Living History: STS and Roleplaying at the Sixth-Grade Level." John M. Wilkes, associate professor of social science and policy studies, presented with Salvati, Modderno and Tonning; Arnold Pulda of Doherty High School was a presenter with Russell, Koch and Possas.
