WPI wrestlers pin down title

The WPI Engineers won their second straight New England College Conference Wrestling Association (NECCWA) title in dramatic fashion last month at Roger Williams University coming from behind to tie Williams College at 116.5 points. The win was the fourth for the Engineers in the 17-year history of the conference. Previous victories were in 1985, 1987 and 1994.

Senior captain Garrett Trombi was named the tournament's outstanding wrestler and, along with senior captain George Chu and junior captain Rich DeStefano, qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament on March 3 and 4 at Augustana College in Rock Island, Ill. At the national tournament, Chu was named an All-American for the second straight year after finishing third at 126 lbs. DeStefano won his first match then lost his next two, which eliminated him from the tournament. Trombi did not wrestle because he reinjured his knee; three years ago the injury caused him to miss the entire season.
