Listening for 'no-see-ums'

A project by two members of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department could ultimately take the bite out of summer. Adjunct Professor Richard H. Campbell, and Assistant Professor Williiam R. Michalson have received a $10,000 contract from the U. S. Army's Walter Reed Medical Institute to record, analyze and synthesize mosquito sounds. The researchers will use state-of-the-art multimedia, direct-to-disk recording and editing equipment to design an improved mosquito sound trap. Investigations will also be carried out to test the feasibility of designing a hand-held mosquito species identifier that identifies the little blood suckers by analyzing their aural signatures.
