Autocross Club competes in BMW CCA 1995 Series

by Chris Pacitto - Class of '98
On Sunday April 2, the WPI Autocross Club competed in its second event of the year at Rockingham Park in Salem, New Hampshire. This race was the first of the Boston Chapter BMW CCA 1995 Autocross Series. A large group of WPI students competed in this race. The competition consisted of three timed runs through a difficult course.

Dan Shreve won the Class I modifieds (Non street legal cars) division driving WPI's formula car 'Gumby'. He missed having the fastest time of the day overall by just one tenth of a second! Alumnus, Brent Peura finished second in the Class I modified division, driving WPI's other formula car 'Pokey'. Eli Garret took third in Class I Modifieds in 'Pokey' while Scott Kearney completed the WPI sweep of Class I modified by taking fourth in 'Gumby'. David Abernethy finished second in Class H (cars with engines larger than 3 liters) driving his 1988 Ford Mustang. Also in Class H, Ramsey Dagher took third in his brother's Porsche 911.

In Class F (cars with engines under 2 liters); Chris Pacitto drove his 1987 Nissan Sentra to a solid finish with the aid of countless bottles of octane-boost. Marc Feinsein missed half of the course during his first run in his 1982 Porsche 924, but he finished in the top half of the class anyway. Alex Berkov drove a 1987 VW Scirrocco to a great finish. Jim Hanson also attended and headed the technical support team.

The Autocross Club's next event is April 23 at Horseneck Beach. Everyone is welcome to come watch or to compete in their own cars. The entry fee is $20 for non NER-SCCA members. For more information, contact Chris Pacitto, chrisp@wpi.edu
