Cultural Festival a memorable success

Alden Memorial was the most exciting place to be on Saturday, April 8. Between 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM, the Ninth Annual Cultural Festival was a chance for the WPI students, faculty and staff from many countries to share their heritage with visitors and each other. The hall was filled with colorful displays, national foods, music, laughter and people beautifully dressed in their traditional national clothes.

Throughout the day, different national foods were available to everyone attending. A variety of dishes were presented and visitors were allowed to chose from the small sandwiches served by German students to the Chinese egg rolls or the exotic and spicy foods from India. In addition, Latin students served delicious pastry and coffee that could easily satisfy even the person with the biggest appetite. A variety of sodas and juices were served as well, for a small fee.

The art lovers or collectors could find this year's Cultural Festival interesting as well. Hand-made Oriental and African jewelry and statues of animals caught the eye of participants. Besides magazines filled with pictures of the exotic places and gifts reflecting the culture, some international groups used TV sets and VCR's to enhance their presentation of the most beautiful places from their counties.

People were enjoying performances while they were eating, talking and laughing. Among the national dances were: Indonesian, Indian, Chinese, Latin, African and Vietnamese. Between the dances, participants had fun watching the Indian fashion show, listening to the Latin and Indian songs and admiring the Tae Kwon Do demonstration.

And absolutely amazing performance of this year's Cultural Festival was that of the Hispanic Students' Association. The stage became a steamy place when they vigorously danced to the hot rhythms of the Latin dances, such as the Venezuelan salsa. These very skillful dancers did a great job of not only entertaining the audience, but impressing them as well, with their energy and the sexiness of their movements. The dancers received an especially big applause after their second appearance at the end of the Festival. Although it started with a minor difficulty with the sound, the performance was breathtaking. The ability to combine the song from the movie The Mask and traditional Latin songs with excellent acting and dancing made their performance unforgettable.

To conclude the festival, the Indian students took the stage. I found their dance also very entertaining. Dressed in traditional colorful clothes, they performed a happy, dynamic dance and left the stage to a loud ovation.
