Last Thursday, April 13, WPI competed in the Massachusetts Open at Stow Acres and finished 16 out of 17. Junior Brian Klauber was the low scorer on the day with an 87.

Softball (3-13)

The softball team had a busy week playing five games, including back to back doubleheaders against New England Women's Eight Conference foes Brandeis University and Mount Holyoke College. They came through the five games with a 2-3 record that could have easily been 5-0. A week ago Friday, the Engineers hosted Brandeis and played two close games. They lost both, by scores of 6-3 and 7-6.
In the first game, WPI seemed to be in control when they led 3-2 after five innings. In the sixth, a couple of costly errors allowed Brandeis to score four runs which ended up being the game. Seniors Renee Cusson and Amy Mercier led the way for WPI. Cusson had two hits, an RBI and four stolen bases while Mercier was on base all day with three stolen bases.
In the second game both teams scored early and often, unfortunately Brandeis came up with the extra run for the win. Junior Teresa Lintzenich had a strong game at the plate going 3 for 3 with an RBI. Freshman Margaret King chipped in with two hits.
The following day WPI traveled west to play Mount Holyoke in another twin-bill. WPI completely dominated both games despite winter-like conditions. The Engineers swept both games 17-4 and 12-3. Junior Tracy Langis led the hit parade as she had five hits on the day including a home run and four RBIs. She also had a double, two stolen bases and scored four runs. Sophomore Stephanie Torrey collected four hits, scored four runs and drove four runs in. King contributed by knocking in three runs herself in the second game. Freshman Sarah Thompson had a solid day with three hits and three RBIs. Picking up the win and going the distance in the first game was senior Jen DeLuca, while freshman Kerry Mallon pitched a complete game to pick up the win in the second game.
Last Tuesday, April 11, the Engineers took on the Coast Guard Academy and lost a tough one in 10 innings by a score of 7-6. The game went into extra innings in which the game shifts to international tie breaker rules. Under these rules, each team starts each inning with a runner on second base with the game proceeding as it normally would. Both teams scored in the eighth inning to force another inning. It finally ended in the tenth when Coast Guard scored with one out. Mercier led WPI with three hits, two stolen bases and two runs scored.

Baseball (7-9)

Even though the baseball team is in the midst of a three game losing streak, they continue to play competitive with the young players as the Engineers remain in first place in the Constitution Athletic Conference. Over the last week, WPI dropped two games to Trinity and Salve Regina. In the Trinity game, WPI was ahead through five innings 4-2 before things fell apart in the sixth. Trinity struck for 16 runs over the last four innings to take the game 18-7. Sophomore Tim Doyle had three hits and an RBI, freshman Guy Miller had two hits and two RBIs and junior captain Len Macrina knocked in two runs on the day.
Last Thursday, April 13, WPI hosted Salve Regina for a single game on the Class of 1893 Field. Salve just had too much power as they hit three home runs and went on to the win 14-4. Freshman Aviv Kaufmann hit a solo home run for WPI. The Engineers did score three runs in the ninth powered by a double by freshman Alex Bartkin.
