Alumni fencers return for exhibition

by Brian Gagnon - Class of 97

The WPI fencing team is making a return to prominence. Recent graduates and seasoned fencing veterans, Bruce Heidebrecht (class of '93), Robert Petit ('93), and Thomas Turner ('93) returned to the WPI campus on Saturday, April 8th, for a fencing exhibition with this year's squad, which finished thirteenth in the New England Conference.

Petit placed sixth in a recent Epee tournament, while Heidebrecht has made his mark in New England fencing as a dynamic foilist and epeeist. Turner has been the most successful of the bunch, performing exceptionally well while placing first and second in recent New England USFA events in Epee. These three individuals sacrificed their time for the betterment of this year's team, and put on a wonderful show.

Following this performance, Turner and present WPI fencer William Mahoney participated in a N.Y. individual tournament with Turner finishing fifth in Epee and second in Sabre. Mahoney was almost equally as impressive, finishing sixth and fourth in the two events, with narrow losses in the final two rounds of Sabre.

Anyone interested in fencing this year or next should feel free to stop by at any of the practices behind the bleachers in Harrington Gym between 4:30pm-6:00pm on Monday, Tuesday, or Thursday. New members are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
