You can make a difference

Newspeak is encouraged as we look forward to the new academic year. As an organization, we have attracted a good number of new members whom we look forward to working with in the months to come.

There are several new professors and administrators, as well as people within the WPI community assuming new roles, as a quick glance at these pages will tell you. There is also the welcome addition of President Parrish, who seems positioned to take WPI to a higher level of recognition. The freshman class is as energetic and capable as they come and they seem to have found their place at WPI.

The many clubs and organizations that help to add to the WPI experience are getting ready for a new year and they all seemed to generate interest at last week's activities fair. This looks to be a really good year all around.

We would like to remind you that this is your newspaper and that we rely on your input, to make sure we provide you with what you want. Send us story ideas, club corner, greek corners, articles about your activities, sports scores and letters to the editor. Tell us if we don't print what you want to read, because no one wins if we work hard publishing a paper that is useless.

As a member of the WPI community, you need to realize that there are many opportunities for you to make a difference. It's really easy to get involved with just about anything on campus. There are many channels through which your ideas can be heard.

Many student organizations, through the combined efforts of a variety of people, come together and do make a difference on campus. For instance, the Student Government Association exists as the voice of the entire student body, with the goal of addressing the needs and concerns of students both academically and socially. The WPI Social Committee works hard to provide quality entertainment through their many committees.

Another example, which perhaps best demonstrates the ability of the student body, is the creation of WPIR, the radio station. It was started last year by ambitious students and an IQP group, and continues to grow and improve.

As you work your way through your four (or more) years at WPI, keep in mind the fact that if you have a statement to make, and you put the effort towards making it, you can be heard. It's never too late to make an impact.
