FOOD! We all need it. Domino's delivers until 1am. If you're up later than that try Denny's (open 24 hours a day and the clientele provide free entertainment). To get there, go up Salisbury St. past the Art Museum, take a left, go under 290, and at the top of the hill take a right onto Lincoln St. For those willing to venture downtown there's a great little place by the name of the Kenwood Diner, located right under 290 on the other side of the Centrum/Main St.
COFFEE! Closely related to food and sometimes more important. Besides the afore-mentioned places there's the Bean Counter right here on Highland St., the Coffee Kingdom on Pleasant (go down Highland, across Park Ave., through the rotary and it's on your right), Tatnuck Booksellers-Cafe (Chandler St., other side of Park Ave.), the Cocobean (Park Ave.) which has live entertainment and is possibly the best kept secret in Worcester, and Eleni's Midnite Cafe on Franklin St. (go down Rte. 9 towards Shrewsbury, take a left after the Honey Farms across from UMass., take a right at the lights). Eleni's is open from Thursdays at 5pm to Sundays at midnight and features some of the best local musicians and poets.
CONCERTS!!! Okay here's the one place Worcester really bites... Every week I'll update y'all on what's happening in the New England area. For the Boston/Cambridge scene there's a lot happening at the Paradise (617-562-8804). Catherine Wheel is there on Aug. 30th and 31st, Edwyn Collins on Sept. 6th, that "good" band Better Than Ezra headlines on Sept. 8th, and Tripping Daisy (they do that "I got a girl" song) is there on Sept. 16th. At Axis (617-262-2437) the British pop band Blur is playing on Sept. 28th. The incredibly talented P. J. Harvey appears at the Orpheum on Oct. 10th and Buffalo Tom appears at the Avalon Sept. 28-29th. Both shows are through Ticketmaster so you can get them at any Strawberries record store (there's one downtown and at the Greendale Mall). Also at Avalon is The Reverend Horton Heat on Sept. 20th and Gus, Jackopierce, and several other bands on Sept. 19th. If kinky and weird are fantasies of yours then check out the ManRay nightclub's Leather & Lace Fantasy night Sept. 1st (617-864-0400)...complete with interactive dungeon. Powerman 5000 will be at the Middle East (617-492-5162) on Sept. 7th. 7 Seconds plays at the Rat (617-536-2750) on Sept. 5th. with its all original lineup. In Providence there's Lupo's, featuring a skafest on Sept. 1st with The Hi-Hats, JC Superska, and Desmon Dekker, as well as the Allstonians on the 3rd. God Street Wine play there on the 8th and Ani DiFranco on the 17th. The show I'm personally raving about is Morphine there on Sept. 19th. If you have heard of Morphine you know their music can be as addictive as the drug of the same name. If you've ever seen them live you know how powerful their drums/saxophone/slide bass instrumentation can be. If not, well, what are you waiting for!?!?
