WPIR preparing for a new year

If you are a freshman, you probably do not know that WPI has its own radio station. Even among those of us who have been here longer, there are some that do not know about its existence. Believe me, it's there and it has its fans! Although the team of DJ's and others involved in radio activity are not able to estimate at this time how big their public is, Chris Kuiawa, who currently holds a secretary position in the radio station, is rather optimistic. He believes that the people who have access to it will listen to the programs.

Unfortunately for some of us, WPIR broadcasts its programs only to the residence halls. In addition, you can listen to it at Salisbury lounge and on the top floor of Fuller Labs on channel 38. The radio station team hopes to be able to broadcast its programs to students and others who reside off campus some day. Unluckily, there are still problems of legal as well as financial nature. Thus, do not expect this to happen in the near future.

WPI Radio (WPIR) originated as an IQP Project and started its activity in October 1994. Its primary purpose was to entertain students. This is still the main goal of our radio team. There is no particular type of show that DJ's have to present. Such independence allows them to decide on the subject matter and the music they like. This approach seems to work well. DJ's are enthusiastic and usually very entertaining. They offer a variety of programs and styles to choose from. This will allow you to select the style and particular DJ you like and listen to what you want.

Although there are more DJ's than WPIR needs at the present, do not feel discouraged if you want to join the radio team. Whether you are an outspoken and aggressive or a rather shy person, there is always something to do at the radio station. You do not have to be the one who does all the talking on the air. WPIR needs a crew to coordinate administrative matters such as advertising its programs among the WPI community. Think about it! The radio station, which is located on the bottom floor of Fuller Labs, is not only an enjoyable place to work, but it is also a great place to hang out, meet people and make some new friends.

WPIR will start broadcasting in about two weeks. Look for the schedule of programs and DJ's in one of the upcoming issues of Newspeak.
