Educators from more than 40 countries presented over 300 papers at the conference, which was held Oct. 15-20 in Saint Paul, Minn. The authors received a plaque and $2,500. "At the awards dinner our paper was cited for the accomplishments of the WPI Global Projects Program-specifically for the work done in the WPI/Delft University 1994 summer program at DUT," says Zwiep. "While Professor Massie and I appreciate the recognition given to the WPI/DUT operations, it is the WPI Global Projects Program, a major part of WPI's educational activities, that was also being recognized-and rightfully so."
Zwiep was head of the Mechanical Engineering Department for 31 years-the longest tenure of any department head in the Institute's history. In the two years before his retirement in 1990 he served as acting provost and vice president for academic affairs. He maintains an office in Higgins Labs and has remained active as a project advisor and in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Zwiep received the William R. Grogan Award at Reunion in June. The award recognizes outstanding contributions by an individual in support of the mission of the college or the welfare of its students.
Massie, who earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and a master's degree in mechanical engineering in 1964 and 1966, respectively, came to DUT as a Fulbright student then joined the university's Civil Engineering Department. He and his family live near Delft. Zwiep and Massie have worked together on project activities in the Netherlands since the summer of 1994.
