Diethild Harrington, adjunct assistant professor of German, received the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association's 1995 German Instructor of the Year Award at the association's conference last week. The award was presented to Harrington "in recognition of her contributions to the profession as a member of the Massachusetts Chapter of AATG and the Massachusetts Foreign Language Association." Harrington, who has taught at WPI since 1988, served on the board of the Massachusetts Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German from 1991 to 1995 and was president for two of those years.
Physics Professor Donald F. Nelson was recently elected to membership in the American Antiquarian Society. Members are chosen for their interest in the advancement of historical research. Nelson joined the WPI faculty in 1987 after a 27-year career at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., where he made fundamental contributions to the development of the laser. light-emitting diodes, optical communications, semiconductors and other critical achievements in modern electronics. Nelson earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. His research interests include solid-state and optical physics, semiconductor superlattices, nonlinear properties of dielectrics in interactions with optical, acoustic and acousto-optic fields and inelastic light scattering. He won the 1995 WPI Trustees' award for Outstanding Research and Creative Scholarship.
