Both teams battled to a 0-0 first quarter tie as both defenses controlled the tempo. In the second quarter it was a different story. WPI took the lead early in the quarter 3-0 when Greg Amiro kicked a 27-yard field goal. Coast Guard stormed right back and took a 7-3 lead on their next possession. The Bears scored again 56 seconds later, when after a WPI turnover, Coast Guard scored on an 18-yard run. The WPI offense came back on their next possession as Cote hooked up with Jim Dubord on a 39-yard touchdown pass to make the score 13-9. Late in the quarter, the WPI defense came up with a fumble recovery to give the ball back to the offense. With five seconds left Ansah stretched over from the 1 yard line to give the Engineers the lead at half-time 15-13.
To start the second half, WPI set up a kickoff return to Khalid Rucker who returned the ball to the Coast Guard 44-yard line. Seven plays later, Cote connected with Kevin O'Neil, who made a great run after the catch, on a 27-yard touchdown pass. The defense came up big again and forced another Bear turnover inside the Coast Guard 15. Three plays later, Ansah scored his second touchdown of the day when he went untouched from 3 yards out to make the score 28-13. WPI added one more score halfway through the fourth quarter when Cote threw his third touchdown pass of the afternoon to tight end Matt Surette.
