The following are symptoms of the prank macro:
- or -
- or -
Here are some steps to rid our computers/documents of the virus:
Method 1: If you do not have any of the symptoms above, but do not want to be affected by the prank macro, hold down the SHIFT key when you open a file that might be affected by the prank macro. This will prevent any Auto macros from running; if the prank macro is present, it will not be loaded.
Method 2: If you have experienced the symptoms above, use the steps below to remove the offending macros and correct affected documents.
1. Remove the macros:
a) On the Tools menu, click Macro.
b) In the Macros Available In list, click All Active Templates.
c) Select the macro named AAAZAO.
d) Click the Delete button. Click Yes when asked if you want to delete the macro.
e) Repeat these steps for the macros named AAAZFS, AutoOpen, and FileSaveAs.
NOTE: Leave the macro named PayLoad in the template. Although this macro was installed by the prank macro, its presence prevents the prank macro from installing itself in the future.
2. Correct any affected documents (you must first complete Step 1 in order for this to work):
a) Open a document that has been affected by the document (a dialog box containing the number one appears when you do this).
b) Select the entire document by pressing CTRL+A or by clicking Select All on the Edit menu.
c) Eliminate the document's final paragraph mark from the selection by pressing SHIFT+Left Arrow.
d) On the Edit menu, click Copy.
e) On the File menu, click New. Select the template you want to use, and click OK.
f) On the Edit menu, click Paste.
g) Save the document.
The prank program does not travel freely over the Internet; it can only be transferred when a user opens a document or template that contains the prank program. Internet Assistant and documents created or read by it cannot be affected by such pranks. Internet Assistant, by design, blocks the mechanism that distributes them.
It cannot it be transferred by WordMail unless an affected document is embedded in the e-mail message and the receiver opens the document.
