Women's Basketball (4-0)

The women's team is off to their best start since 1985-86 and are one of the hottest teams in New England after defeating two of the top five ranked teams in the preseason polls. Junior forward Danielle Batey followed Kim Landry's selection as player of the week in the New England Women's Eight by being chosen for her play against Southern Maine.

The Engineers came off their mini break with a home game versus Bridgewater State College last Tuesday. The Bears entered the game with a young squad and an 0-3 record looking to get in the win column. WPI began to pull away midway through the first half and never were pressured again as they downed Bridgewater 78-62. Landry had an outstanding night with 26 points and 15 rebounds. Batey added 18 points and 11 rebounds while senior Jenn Lovin had 12 and 10 boards. Senior Rebecca Rubenstein also registered double figures with 11 points.

Men's Basketball (3-2)

The men's team played their annual Saturday after Thanksgiving game with conference foe MIT and came out with a 61-53 win. WPI had control the entire game as Jim Naughton and Jeff Cayer led the way with 19 points and 15 points respectively.

Last Wednesday night the Engineers hosted Babson College in a conference game and, as usual, it was a physical contest. The first half went along smooth with both teams trading baskets early on. The Beavers began to create some breathing room halfway into the first half, but WPI came back and pulled to within eight at half-time trailing 47-39.

In the second half the fun began as both teams picked up the pace of the game which led to more physical contact. Babson was able to continue their control of tempo as they won the game 96-83. Junior Mike Shannon scored a career high 27 points in the loss while Naughton had 18 points and 15 rebounds.

Women's Swimming (0-3)

The swim team had a Tuesday night meet at the Alumni Gym pool against Westfield State. The Engineers were defeated by the Owls 45-25. Senior Monika Lehky was a double-winner for WPI in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle. Senior Katie Snell was the only other winner for the Engineers as she won the 100-yard butterfly.

Some of our swimmers are currently ranked in the top 24 in New England in their events. Snell is ranked eleventh in the 50-yard butterfly, while Becky Kupcinskas is ranked in two events: the 50 and 100-yard backstroke where she is twelfth and 22nd. Our 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams are ranked fifteenth and eleventh respectively.
