Women's Swimming (0-4)

The Engineers had a busy weekend a week ago as they participated in the New England Women's Eight Conference Invitational and then followed that with a meet versus Connecticut College. Unfortunately the team did not make out that well as they finished eighth at the invitational and lost to Connecticut 124-62.

At the invitational WPI could only manage one top ten finisher. Senior Diver Kim Scofield placed seventh in the 3-meter event. In the meet against Connecticut, senior Katie Snell was a double-winner in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle, graduate student Becky Kupcinskas won the 100-yard backstroke and Scofield won the 3-meter diving.

Men's Swimming (1-2)

The men swimmers also competed against Connecticut College last week and didn't have any luck either as the dropped the meet 100-74. We had one double-winner as sophomore Jamie Murdock won the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke. Our 400-yard freestyle relay team was victorious with the foursome of Murdock, classmate Jon Prusak, junior Teak Ackman and senior Ian Buckley.

Wrestling (1-0)

The wrestling team opened their 1995-96 dual-match season against Rhode Island College a week ago Friday night and came out on top 47-6. Winners for WPI were: Dave Gardner (118 lbs.); Aaron Becker (126 lbs.); Mark Simon (134 lbs.); Nate Fiore (142 lbs.); Dan Hugaboom (150 lbs.); Jeff Stearns (158 lbs.); Lance Baden (167 lbs.); Stan Farrell (177 lbs.) and Craig Howitt (Hvwt).

Women's Basketball (5-2)

The Engineers were ranked #6 in New England as they entered the week. They had games against three strong squads from Westfield State, Anna Maria and Salve Regina. They ended up winning one of the three as they broke a two-game losing streak Thursday night against Salve Regina.

A week ago last Saturday the Engineers traveled west to take on preseason #4 in New England, Westfield State, in hopes of knocking off their third ranked team in the early going. It was not to be as WPI had a bad shooting game and turned the ball over more than usual and lost to the Owls 72-51. Kim Landry led all scorers with 22 points. Danielle Batey and Jenn Lovin both registered double figures in points and rebounds. Batey had 10 points and 10 rebounds while Lovin had 11 points and 12 rebounds.

On Tuesday night, The Engineers were looking for a little payback as they hosted the Amcats of Anna Maria College. Last year Anna Maria pulled out a win in overtime. In a game that went down to the final seconds again, and despite a career high 26 points by Lovin, the Amcats were victorious 63-61. Lovin also added 13 rebounds in the loss and Landry scored 14 points and took down 16 boards.

Behind career nights by Landry and Batey, WPI downed Salve Regina 84-81 to snap their mini two-game slide. Landry's 33 points were a career high and new school record and Batey added a career high 22 points in pacing the Engineers to the come from behind win. Batey added 15 rebounds and Landry took down 10 boards.

Men's Basketball (4-4)

The Engineers had a 1-2 week with losses at Nichols, home against Anna Maria, but bounced back to take a convincing win over Wentworth to snap a three-game losing streak.

A week ago Saturday, WPI traveled to Dudley, Mass. to take on the Bison of Nichols College. Despite a 23-point, 17-rebound game from Jim Naughton, the Bison prevailed 94-88. Jeff Cayer had another solid performance with 22 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

In last Tuesday's second game of a doubleheader, WPI took on Anna Maria hoping to rebound from their last loss. In a game similar to the earlier one, the Amcats pulled out a 76-73 win. WPI couldn't hold onto their 8-point half-time lead down the stretch. Cayer tied a career high when he scored 25 points to lead WPI.

Two nights later the Engineers hosted Wentworth looking to break their losing steak. WPI had control from the beginning as they never looked back from their 39-23 half-time lead. They won the game going away 82-60. Naughton led all scorers with 19 points, while Cayer had 18 and Mike Shannon and Greg Simpson each added 10 points. Naughton also pulled down 14 boards.
