A gem of opportunity at WPI

by Dave Koelle - Editor-in-Chief

Learning at WPI goes beyond classes. Often, it even finds its ways into extracurricular activities. You could learn a lot at Newspeak! You could learn desktop publishing and business procedures. You could learn more about photography, or see if you have a knack for writing. We can offer you numerous opportunities which not only look good on a resume but could help you in the real world, too.

Today, January 16, Newspeak will be holding a membership drive for any student interested in publishing, writing, business, or photography. Students may stop in Morgan A at any time between 6:30pm and 8:00pm. Newspeak writers will be there, willing to talk to you about responsibilities and time commitments. We'll also have some pizza, so you get something out of the deal, even if you don't pursue it any further.

What can you get out of joining Newspeak? A lot! You see, Newspeak is not "just another club" that is going to soak up your time and leave you with nothing to show for it. First, you will get real experience in what you're interested. This experience could be placed on a resume if you want, but it's always yours for life. You would also have the opportunity to become more involved - like the potential to become an editor.

You'll be the first to know when something is about to happen on campus, and you'll be right in the action when stuff gets hot. You'll have the inside scoop on all sorts of neat news, like searches for new administrators, or the design of the Campus Center. Did the renovated Wedge surprise you? We've known that was going to happen for a couple of months now. Thanks to our connections with important people on campus, we're one of the first places to know about important events when they happen (and often before they happen). You can get a chance to meet these connections if you join Newspeak. You would also be able to make your own connections for articles you investigate. You'll be amazed at the variety of people you'd meet. If you join Newspeak, not only would you know the Newspeak staff, but you'd also be linked that much closer to other important and interesting people on campus.

Time commitments are whatever you want them to be. Do you only want to spend an hour a week on Newspeak-related work? That's fine by us, as long as you get done whatever you have to do. Time commitments are minimal and extremely flexible.

One of the best things about Newspeak is that you get to see the fruits of your labor every Tuesday. You'll see your article or your photo in print. You'll be able to say, "I designed the front page!" You'll know that without your effort, Newspeak might not be around for the campus to read.

There's also the occasional perk: some free tickets to a local club, some sample CD's of upcoming music talents, some free pizza. Speaking about free pizza, there'll be some of that at the membership drive on Tuesday. Stop by. The worst thing that can happen is that you will get fed.
