Celebrate Black History month
"A Separate Heritage, A Common Destiny" is the theme for WPI's observance of Black History Month. Associate Dean of Student Life Tom Hartvig Thomsen and committee of students, faculty and staff have coordinated the activities, most of which are free. Everything is open to the public.
A list of Black History Month activities follows.
Thursday, Feb. 8, 6:30 p.m., Great Hall, Higgins House
Professor R.J. Njoroge, former dean of the faculty of education at Kenyatta University in Kenya, will lecture on "Democratization in Africa." Njoroge, who holds a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Nairobi, is currently a visiting professor at the College of the Holy Cross and a visiting scholar at the Harvard University Graduate School of Education.
Wednesday, Feb. 14, 3:30 p.m., Newell Hall, Atwater Kent
Edwin J. Nichols, Ph.D., will present "Does Culture Matter?" From 1:30 to 3 p.m., in Gordon Library's Seminar Room, Nichols will lead a workshop for student leaders of color from WPI, Clark University, and Holy Cross.
Friday, Feb. 16, 7 p.m., Riley Commons
Black History Month Talent Show. Admission is $2 with a WPI ID; $3 to the public. Members of the campus community are invited to perform. Prizes will be awarded. Deadline for entrants is Friday, Feb. 2. For information call ext. 6806 or e-mail ribbions@wpi, gsutton@wpi or tkelly@wpi.

Wednesday, Feb. 21, 7 p.m., Room A, Morgan Commons
A Celebration of East African Cultural and Foods presented by Thomsen and by Bernard Ongewe '98 of Nairobi, Kenya. Thomsen will discuss the region's culture while Ongewe, assisted by Food Service professionals, will prepare East African foods. Seating is limited. Call ext. 5201 to reserve a place.
