Men place second in meet at Coast Guard

The men's indoor track team improved their winning record last Saturday with a strong second place standing in a meet held at Coast Guard. While losing to Coast Guard 160.5 to 131.5, the WPI men held off a strong Bates contigent as well as the teams from Westfield, UMass/Dartmouth, and Worcester State. The results can be attributed to WPI placing in almost every event.

Sophmore Dave Hawes competed in 5 events taking a first in the 200m, sixth in the 55m dash, seventh in the 400m, and running in the winning 4x400m relay team also consisting of Steve LaBranche, Pete Manolakos, and Jeff Coleman.

Coleman, a freshman, also came through for the Engineers in other events by winning the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.2 seconds and placing fifth in the 55m dash, and seventh in both the long and high jump.

Also performing well for WPI were captain Steve Labranche (2nd, 500m), captain Rich Person (3rd, 1500m), Marc Lefebvre (2nd, HJ), Tim Caldwell (3rd, 1000m), Manolakos (3rd, 400m), Dana Schlosser (4th, weight), Doug Martin (4th, 55mh), Rich Crispo (4th, 800m), and David Bowler (1st, Pole Vault). The Distance Medley Relay team of Crispo, Levesque, Person, and Caldwell ran a great time of 11:04.57 to come in second place.

The next meet for the guys will be in Maine where they will once again battle the strong Bates team for, hopefully, a first place finish.
