To the Editor:
Once again we have proof that Americans are #1 in the world when it comes to whining about irrelevant topics. This time the example comes from one of our own: Peter H. Dell'Erba. In last week's Newspeak (March 26, 1996), Mr. Dell'Erba exercised his right to free speech by informing the readers of how he was offended by a recent display in the library. At the same time, he also demonstrated his closed-mindedness. What Mr. Dell'Erba does not seem to realize is that we all come from different backgrounds, have different experiences, and different moral values. What one person believes is offensive may in fact be art to another, as he pointed out. However, it appears that Mr. Dell'Erba does not want to accept this but would rather everyone follow his own system of moral values - a disturbing trend that can be seen throughout America these days.
Also, by invoking the "religion card," Mr. Dell'Erba has, in my mind, nullified his entire argument. By using this line of defense, Mr. Dell'Erba has shown that he is not using his own thought processes and opinions, but merely reciting the views that others have given him via his religion; which, as Mr. Dell'Erba might not realize, there are many different religions in the world and some people do not actually follow his or any of them.
