The Mathematical Sciences Department has several activities planned in observance of Math Awareness Week, April 21-27. The winning entries in the Math Club competition will be on display in the department throughout the week. The theme of the competition was "Mathematics and Decision Making." Pi Mu Epsilon honor society will hold an initiation dinner at 5:30pm on Thursday, April 25, in Higgins House, and the Math Department's Award Ceremonies will be held at 4:30pm on Friday, April 26, in Stratton Hall 204.

Students are invited to enter the Amazing Treasure Hunt on the World Wide Web (http://www.math.wpi.edu/Contests/TreasureHunt.html). Contestants will be challenged to navigate a maze by answering questions to open doors to reach the Treasure Room. There are a total of 81 rooms; an optimal path would take participants through 14 rooms. Selecting a sequence of questions determines the path to the treasure, which may be quite a bit longer than the shortest path. A total of $500, contributed by United Technologies Corp., will be awarded to the winners of the treasure hunt.

For additional information about these activities, call Brigitte Servatius, associate professor of mathematical sciences, at ext. 5361, or Assistant Professor Ansuman Bagchi at ext. 5267.
