Student Government releases agenda for the academic year

by Jennx Yambert - SGA Secretary

The Undergraduate Student Government Association (SGA) exists as the voice of WPI's student body. The goal of SGA is to facilitate communications between the students and the rest of the WPI community. Students should think of SGA as a tool to try to improve academic and social aspects of student life. Here is a brief introduction to some of the SGA committees, and some of the issues they are currently addressing.

The Committee on Policies and Procedures is primarily focused on the workings of SGA. The committee interprets the SGA governing documents and reviews all proposed amendments. Because the organization of SGA affects all of the organizations funded by SGA, Policies and Procedures is sometimes called upon to interpret SGA's interactions with those organizations. Currently, Policies and Procedures is addressing an issue that came up late last year about club sports. SGA is not allowed to fund exclusionary organizations, so clubs like cheerleading, which have limits on the number of members, may have to change their constitutions if they wish to continue getting funding. If you are concerned about issues like these, contact SGA or the committee chair.

The Committee of Academic Issues (CAI) addresses the academic concerns and interests of the students at WPI. CAI's agenda is established from the concerns and suggestions brought to them by the student body, faculty, and adminstration, in addition to the voting members of SGA. CAI enables students to voice academic concerns in an organized and cohesive manner. The committee also seeeks to act as a channel of communication between the students and faculty in an effort to keep both parties aware, and informed, of the academic concerns of the students. CAI encourages all members of the WPI community to attend its meetings, or e-mail the chairs at any time.

The Committee on Student Life Issues (CSLI) is charged with looking at the non-academic aspect of student life at WPI. This A-term they will be looking at the following issues: getting another change machine on campus, discussing the plans to change the name of the Engineers, trying to get coffee sold on campus at hours most convenient to students, looking into more convenient Health Services hours, and addressing parking issues on campus. CSLI meetings, held on Wednesdays at 7pm in the SGA office, are open to the WPI community. The WPI community is also welcome to e-mail the committee chair if they have particular issues of concern.

The SGA office, and all members of SGA, are always available to address student concerns and needs. The office, located near the Wedge, has a change machine, and photocopier (5 cents a copy), that are available for student use. Students are ecouraged to bring in their old tests, so that they can be photocopied (with the name blackened out) and put in the test files as reference materials. Course materials can be put on reserve in the office, as is true in the library.

SGA meets on Tuesdays at 6pm in the Lower Wedge. All meetings are open to the WPI community. Kris Niendorf, from Residential Life, will be at today's meeting to discuss last year's housing lottery.
