Welcome Greg Snoddy!

by Dave Koelle - Editor-in-Chief

If you visited the Student Activities Office this past week, you may have seen a new face. Greg Snoddy has joined the Student Activities staff as the Director of Orientation Programs and Student Activities.

Greg grew up in Ohio, and earned his undergraduate degree at Ohio University. He get his Master's in College Student Personnel at Bowling Green, and his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at West Virginia University. Before coming to WPI, he worked for six years at the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, and served as Associate Dean of Students at Salem-Teikyo University in West Virginia, a school of about 1000 students, where he coordinated orientation programs and was involved in supervision. When asked what he thought about WPI so far, Greg responded that he sees a lot of energy around campus, that it seems to be a fun environment. He realizes that a lot of work lies ahead of him, but he said that he is lucky to have Andrea Dorow showing him what there is to do and how things work at WPI. He will try to get out and meet people and be visible on campus. He plans to visit various student activities, and to attend Undergraduate and Graduate Student governments, which he sees as "avenues to facilitate change." He also recognizes the "great things" that are happening at SocComm. Greg says that he will try encourage involvement in student activities, but stresses that one must succeed academically before becoming too involved in activities. "You can't participate if you can't make the grade," he says, "but we'll try to help you. We don't want you to waste your [tuition] money!"

The projects which currently consume much of Greg's time include the January and Fall orientations. He plans to tap into the campus's resources extensively to make the orientations the best that they can be. He would also like to solicit ideas, input, and assistance for these orientation events, which he promises "will be fantastic."

Greg wants students to feel comfortable coming into the Student Activities Office at any time, and invites students to send him email if they have any concerns, questions, or input. "The most important thing is that this is a team effort, a partnership," says Greg. "Let us know if you have any input or concerns."
