Football captain Brian Learned, a senior majoring in mechanical engineering from Clinton, Mass., was recently named Scholar-Athlete of the Week by Burger King Corp. A $10,000 scholarship has been donated to WPI's general scholarship fund in his name. Learned was named to the Freedom Football Conference All-Academic Team last season, when he was the team's leading tackler, and leads in tackles again this year. He maintains a 3.2 GPA and is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

The Burger King College Football Scholarship Program represents the largest single corporate commitment to college scholarships in the U.S.; it is the only one that recognized athletes for academics, community service and athletics. For the second straight year, Burger King is donating a total of $1 million to college scholarship funds in the names of college football players who maintain high academic standards and are actively involved in the community. Burger King has a long history of supporting academics and believes that honoring scholar-athletes highlights the value of education.
