Many of us have felt depressed from time to time and have found that it was a clue that something is wrong. Events out of our control, sudden loss, a bad grade on a test, a breakup with a boyfriend or girlfriend are all common life events about which it is normal to feel bad. For most of us, we talk to friends or seek help, and these feelings dissipate.

For others, depression is a feeling which doesn't go away. It too is an indication that something is wrong and may be a sign of underlying problems that need treatment by a professional. Just as one would see a doctor for a physical ailment, one should see a counseling professional for a psychological problem.

Depression can be a serious illness. Many people die because of it; only we don't see the numbers on the nightly news. How would you know if you or someone else has depression? Here are some of the signs:

Symptoms of depression can range from mild to severe. It is vital that someone get help before the symptoms progress to the severe stage. Depression is a very treatable condition.
