Poly Challenge Cup goes to Men's Basketball

About a hundred student-athletes, coaches, and athletic department staff members got together last Sunday for the Poly Club Challenge Cup. Although teams' reputations were on the line, most of the teams were there to have fun and to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow student-athletes.

It all began with the bowling, basketball, and soccer goal competitions. While the soccer teams were expertly placing shots in the goal and the basketball teams were sinking in their shots, some teams came up stronger than expected in these events while others reassured themselves why they were playing the sport they are instead of another.

Next came the volleyball competition which saw some great games. The women's volleyball team played strongly, as expected, winning game after game, but were stopped by the football team contingent. The men's track team managed to gain a surprise win over the football team. The faculty team also pulled off some close games in order to rack up some points.

The final event of the day was the 4x100m relay. In this event, the football team revenged their loss on the volleyball court by outsprinting the men's track team to win the relay competition.

The day came to an end with a barbecue dinner where the winners of the competition were announced. Coming in first place was the men's basketball team with a total of 43 points. The Department of Athletics, composed of coaches, trainer Kim, Geoff Hazzard, and Ray Gilbert, came in second with 38 points. Third place went to the football team which acquired a total of 36 points. The top female varsity sports team was the women's basketball team which came in fifth place overall.

So the men's basketball team currently owns the Poly Club Challenge Cup until next year's competition. When next year comes around, though, the competition will only get more fierce and possibly a new winner will come out on top.
