Natalie Imbruglia (pronounced Im-broo-lee-ah) was introduced to the entertainment industry when she left home for Sydney, Australia and before she became a star on an Australian soap opera called Neighbours, she completed several commercials. When she left the show she moved to London in 1996. After experiencing what London had to offer, she found herself wanting to leave and to pursue something else. That something else turned out to be her singing and song writing career.
She finally moved to Los Angeles to start her ascension into the music industry. There she signed a deal with RCA and started to write songs with well-known songwriters and producers. Nigel Godrich produced her debut song "Torn". He is also credited with producing Radiohead's OK Computer album.
Imbruglia's "country-tinged songs about twenty-something womanhood" has made it to the airwaves and people like her. Imbruglia sang her debut single, "Torn" on the March 7th airing of Saturday Night Live. Her music video for "Torn" (directed by Alison McClean) has been playing on MTV for the past 2 weeks or so. Even though the song "Torn" was never written by her, the other tracks on her album that were, are just as good. "Big Mistake" is her other single that is defining what kind of artist she is.
Imbruglia's sound has been compared to veterans singer/songwriters such as Alanis Morissette and Shawn Colvin with an Euro-popish twist to it like Robyn. The lyrics have the "penned up hurt" kind of feel to them, but she didn't want to give off that kind of feeling. Surprisingly to some it gave off a feeling of wantonness of romance and love. Instead when she wrote the lyrics she wrote about her mental state of her early adulthood life. This fresh new voice has been added to the ocean of artists and she sounds very promising. Hopefully we will hear more of Natalie's songs on the airwaves soon.
