In Toh's letter, a good point is brought up, what exactly are the rules for gaining access to campus buildings? When I needed to drop off my sufficiency, a campus police officer refused to allow me access to the humanities professors mailboxes, even though the officer would be right there. I'd dropped things off when the building was closed at night before, why couldn't I at the end of A term?
The officer, an obnoxious rent-a-cop named Sargent Ring, yelled at me, demanded to see my ID, told me I didn't know what I was talking about, and finally told me to go away. He referenced an internal memo, written by the humanities department head, Penny Rock. This memo had nothing to do with the humanities mailbox area, and when I asked her, she told me it had nothing to do with the area in question, but had to do with access to a single, specific room in the humanities office.
The officer didn't read or understand the memo, and was extremely rude to me. This is nothing new from certain members of the WPI police force (don't get me wrong, we have alot of good officers, but we have a few who could care less about the students). Often they seem less than knowledgeable about the rules of the campus (they told me the mail room area closed at 5pm in the summer, until I complained to the mail room and they remedied the problem).
I would like to see building access policies for each building posted, with times and who to contact about an exception to the rule. For example, AK closes at either 10pm or 11pm on weekdays. Higgins Labs seems to be open almost 24/7, but locked on arbitrary nights. This seems to be an area where we could have significantly more communication to the students from the administration.
Sincerely,
Robert McDonald, Class of '99
