Starting this week, my Blues Beat column will be in appearing 4 weekly papers that are mailed to the households in Farmington, Avon, Simsbury, Canton, Burlington, Harwinton, Connecticut. About 9 years ago, the Blues Beat column started in The Herald (New Britain). Shortly after that, Blues Beat was picked up by three other daily papers, Middletown Press, Bristol Press, and Torrington Register-Citizen. These four papers cover about half the state's towns and run from the center of the state to the shore and the western border. The column appears in the weekend entertainment section and has a photo and a club schedule. Right now I'm Director of Technology and IR&D at pretty big aerospace company (by company growth and change, not ever a re-employment for me), and I feel like I did when I was a kid in a candy shop (and, boy, was I a candy addict!). My division is a leader in software-defined radios as I conjectured we'd be when I did a seminar brief at the 'tute a few years ago. I have an interesting job working with communications, navigation, IFF, and reconnaissance experts who are at the tops of their fields. My daughters, Larissa and Adriana, are now 10 (11 in July) and 13 (February) and they've taught me that--as great as I thought it would be to be a dad--it's better being a dad than I ever dreamed. I gave up soccer a couple years ago, mainly because I was working two weeks at a time out in California on a proposal. I miss the game. Funny that I was a JV most of the time at WPI, got into the Massachusetts State League after graduating, the ended up by playing with/against people who were on their country's World Cup teams down here in Jersey. I can't say enough how much I appreciate my WPI coaches who led me that way, especially my JV coach (are you out there Mr. K?). Now I stay in shape mostly by riding my road bike and skiing every chance I get. Swimming is good, and my girls are water people, but I have to admit that every time I get in a pool I remember the pain of those twice-a-day sessions in the little 20-yard tank in the Alumni Gym! I don't think I'll be breaking any 200-breast records again anytime soon. If you remember me, shoot me an e-mail. If you don’t, I might just publish that group photo I took on Morgan third our freshman year (or details on how your work was when I graded you as a TA)! -April 20, 2004

Herbert J. Hedberg

Dear Sirs: I wanted to let you know that I saw your write-up about my son, Mason, among the 1973 class notes in the most recent issue of WPI Transformations. Your brief description of his magnificent accomplishment last year is fairly accurate and I am thrilled that you recognized our relationship and chose to include the piece for my classmates to read. Unfortunately, characterizing my role at Cetek as an electrical engineer is somewhat inaccurate; although that is the degree I received from WPI in 1973. It’s not that I am not proud of my chosen discipline, it’s just that failing to mention that I am Sr. VP of Operations for the company makes it sound like I’ve made no progress in my career since my first job at Texas Instruments 30 years ago. Cetek’s website at www.cetek.com describes how we apply automation, informatics, and production paradigms to increase the efficiency of finding new drug-like compounds. Last January, I hosted a meeting here at Cetek with James P. Dittami, Ph.D., Dr. William W. Durgin, and Denise R. Rodino to provide them with information about Cetek’s business in the hope of identifying collaboration opportunities between WPI and Cetek now or in the future. This summer, a WPI Computer Science major, Dave Norcott, interned in my Bioinformatics group writing database application software in support of our drug discovery processes. In October, I attended the World-Changing Technologies seminar in Higgins. I have been well served by my past and present associations with WPI and continue to hold the quality of the educational institution in the highest regard. Thank you again for your inclusion. Regards, Bert Hedberg, BSEE ‘73 -January 04, 2005

After 20 years away from New England (mostly in Minnesota and the past two in Phoenix), I have relocated to Portland, Maine--one of the advantages of being an independent consultant (www.dbharmony.com). During the past 10 years, in addition to my original "day job" of statistical quality improvement/data expertise, I have developed an interest in the psychology of organizations and change management. I've been putting both to good use this past year by being very active in a government sponsored effort in the United Kingdom to improve their healthcare system. I also do a lot of public speaking at quality improvement conferences. I was the Chair of the Statistics Division of the American Society for Quality this past year and have recently become the monthly statistical columnist for Quality Digest. I am single again and looking forward to 4 seasons--the past two years of 115 degree summers in Phoenix nearly did me in! -December 20, 2004

Mark Cioffi

Just completed 3 years as Trustee and Treasurer for the Pembroke Town Library. I won election as a write-in candidate with a landslide of 84 votes (it's a small town). Our largest accomplishment was to build a new 8,800 s.f. $1.4 million facility. The previous 40 years the library was in an 800 s.f. rented house and this is the first time in 225 years the town has owned the library building. We raised over half the funds and worked with the politicians, at both the town and state level, to make the other funding work. Not a large project by my WPI classmates' experience, but politics was no fun. Any WPI student or grad that wants an annual membership, just let me know! -April 02, 2005
