Elly has recently remarried to Joseph Tierney (a Rutgers graduate '81) they reside in Washington D.C. Elly is a Preconstruction Manager with Turner Construction Mid Atlantic office. She is currently pursuing her Masters at the Virginia Tech No. VA campus. Her son Tom (17) will be entering Fordham University in the fall, and Devin will be a junior and editor in chief of his school newspaper. -December 20, 2006

Ernie Cormier

I left Nextel in August after four years as VP of Product Management, living in Washington, DC. Jan and I have just finished a spontaneous 5600-mile, 14-state driving vacation across the US, and I'll soon be joining ntl, the largest British cable TV and broadband provider, as SVP of Corportate Strategy, based in London. We'll be moving over there in 1Q06. Our oldest two kids are out of school, living in San Francisco, while our youngest is a sophomore at Smith College. I continue to regard WPI as a key enabler of everything I've accomplished in my career. -December 14, 2005

A research paper co-authored by Stuart Shapiro (Ph. D. '81) entitled "Location and orientation of Triclosan in phospholipid model membranes" [Eur. Biophys. J. 33(5): 448-453 (2004)] was featured in issue 5 (2005) of Resonants, Wiley's NMR Knowledge Base's e-zine. Headlined "Cracking eggs to test a bactericide", the report discusses a study on the membranotropic effects of Triclosan related to the antibacterial mode of action of this phenolic disinfectant. -June 23, 2005

Stuart Shapiro

Stuart Shapiro, Ph.D. ’81, has been appointed Group Leader, Microbiology and Deputy Director, Biological Research at Basilea Pharmaceutica AG in Basel, Switzerland (http://www.basileapharma.com). Stuart, who resides with his wife Corine (née Bloch) and their children in Kilchberg (canton Zürich), joined Basilea as head of the Pathogen Screening Laboratory in April 2001, after ten years on staff at the Institute for Oral Microbiology and Basic Immunology of the University of Zürich School of Dentistry. A profile of Stuart appeared in the July/August 2002 issue of SIM News, the house organ of the Society for Industrial Microbiology (headquartered in Fairfax, Virginia; http://www.simhq.org), in honor of his fiftieth birthday. Stuart, who was enrolled in WPI’s Department of Biology (faculty advisor: Prof. Dr. K. L. Giles), wrote his doctoral dissertation at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, Inc. under the sponsorship of the late Prof. Dr. Eliahu Caspi. -July 03, 2003

R. K. "Arkey" Endres

Arkey was promoted to Senior Technical Associate at DuPont's Corpus Christi Plant where he is responsible for the site's instrumentation and control systems as well as providing design leadership on a site expansion project. He is also leading an effort to replace a legacy DCS system. Arkey and his wife, Gina, are the proud parents of Dana, 19, (Texas A&M "Fightin Texas Aggie" Class of 2008) and Alyssa, 15. Arkey is also the owner of Endres e-Media which produces high end specialty printed and video media. -March 31, 2005

Scott Mathews

Coming up on my third year as principal engineer at the Steward Observatory -- the research division of the Astronomy Department at the Universtiy of Arizona. I'm currently working on the Large Binocular Telescope, which incoporates twin 8.4 meter diameter primary mirrors, and is stuated atop Mt. Graham in Easten Arizona. Also, I'm designing a new eschelle spectrograph for the 6.5 meter MMT telescope atop Mt. Hopkins in Southern Arizona. For the last two years I have written a page-a-day calendar for Accord Publishing on the subject of Space. I have also been a contributing writer to the Bloomsbury Review, a literary magazine published in Denver, Colorado. I live in Tucson with my wife, Landry, teenage son, and two year old daughter. Kevin celebrated his 20-year anniversary in August working at Ticona, the technical polymer business of the Celanese Corporation. In October 2004 Kevin and his wife Alexa relocated from northwestern New Jersey to the greater Cincinnati area. He now works at the new Ticona headquarters in Florence, KY. Brian Witkowski

Currently working at Essilor International located in Dudley, MA, as the Global Engineering Tooling Manager. Essilor is the worldwide leader in ophthalmic lenses with production sites around the world. As the Tooling Manager, I am responsible for all developmental design for our optical injection molds as well as support for our 5 production sites located in the US, France, Thailand, and China. I have been with Essilor for 9 years after some time in the Army, as well as a variety of other jobs. 2006 will mark my 18th wedding anniversary to my wife, Kim. We have 2 children - Rebecca who is 13 and Matthew who is 11. As with most families today, we are active in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, basketball, baseball, etc. etc. We reside in Northeast Connecticut. -March 31, 2006

Keith J Ruskin

I am the director of neurosurgical anesthesia at Yale University, where I am now an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Neurosurgery. My group cares for patients undergoing surgery on the brain or spinal cord. The work is challenging, but interesting and very gratifying. When I am not at work, I can usually be found either at home with my family or in the air. This picture of Andrea, Daniel, and me was taken during a recent trip to Block Island. I recently added a new rating to my pilot certificate, and my family has been flying "Ruskinair" all over New England. -July 23, 2003

Michael Atamian

I am currently working in San Diego, CA as a Senior Analyst for the firm Metron, Inc. Our company specializes in scientific consulting, with emphasis on using modeling and simulation techniques to address complex issues of interest to government, military, and corporate sponsors. Projects encompass such diverse topics as operations analyses, system design for future Navy surface combatants, and software design and development. I'm also in the process of earning a Master's degree in Forensic Sciences. On the personal side, I continue to enjoy travel abroad whenever possible and experiencing the cultural diversity of the world. So (to paraphrase a friend's comment), I haven't embarassed the alma mater yet, but there is still time! -June 18, 2003

Greetings from the Pacific Northwest, where I have lived for 21 years! I finally changed jobs, and left Blount for Micropump/Idex Corporation in Vancouver, Washington as their Supply Chain Manager. My daughters are both in high school; Carly is 17 and Kaitlin is 14, with Carly leaving for college in September 2007. Time flew by! When I'm not at work, I am watching them play school and club basketball, cooking and plotting my next trip back to New England. Mair lives in Panama City, Panama, in Central America. He joined Mays Free Zone Colon in a business partnership to develop a large motorcycle business out of mainland China, under the name brand MAX MOTOR, with a tremendous success in over 15 countries in Central and South America, as well in the Caribbean. Chris Cavigioli

By the time Transformations was published, Chris had already been recruited away from NemeriX (makers of the World's Lowest Power GPS Chipset) to work as Market Development Manager for Multimedia at MIPS Technologies in Mountain View. This thereby cut his commute from 25-hours (which included 3 hours of driving a rental car over the Swiss Alps after a 20-hour intercontinental flight) to just 25 minutes. Chris and Carrie are now enjoying the pastoral San Mateo, CA countryside while working like crazy in Silicon Valley and enjoying weekends in San Francisco and thereabouts. Peter Gurney

CDR Peter L. Gurney Jr., USNR will end his three year tour of command of NR Carrier Augment Unit Southwest 0376 on September 11, 2004. An experienced F/A-18 Naval Aviator, he has utilized his experience in Carrier aviation to lead his men and women in augmenting West Coast based aircraft carriers. His next tour of duty in the Naval Reserve will be with the US Pacific Command, Pearl Harbor, HI as Contingency Operations Officer. In civilian life he remains a B-777/200 First Officer for United Airlines based in Los Angeles, CA. On August 19th, 2004 he received the Air Line Pilot's Association 2004 Presidential Citation Award for his actions during the successful 3 hour single engine divert from Auckland, NZ to Kona, HI in March of 2003. -August 17, 2004

In February 2004, I completed my Ed.D. degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. I am in my sixth year as a computer science faculty member at Keene State College (NH) working with first-year students and future K-12 technology teachers. As of January 1, 2002, I have been promoted to Associate with the firm Fay, Spofford & Thorndike. Based in the main office in Burlington, MA, I manage a team of 12 engineers specializing in traffic engineering and ITS. I have also developed expertise in the growing field of planning and designing bicycle/pedestrian facilites. Projects range from the South Fork Bikeway in South Hampton New York to portions of the East Coast Greenway in Maine. Jon Kaplan

After spending 5 years in Salem, Oregon, my wife Anne (Ford) and I moved back to VT in 1995. I have been working in the field of Transportation Engineering and Planning since 1991 in both the private and public sector. I have been specializing in bicycle and pedestrian transportation (sidewalks, bike lanes, multi-use paths) since 1994. I have been a P.E. since 1995. One major project in my current job as assistant bicycle and pedestrian coordinator is developing a bicycle and pedestrian design manual for use by the Agency and others in VT. It is based on current national guidelines, best practices as identified by professional organizations like ITE and personal experience with what works and what doesn't, especially in a more rural state like Vermont. Anne and I have been married for 10 years and have two children, Jacob -4 and Isaac - 1 and 1/2. Anne is a career and financial aid counselor for VT Student Assistance Corporation. We love to get outside for any kind of activity, especially bicycling (road and mountain), hiking, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing and sledding with the kids. -June 14, 2002

Donna Barone Viens

After 16 years in Engineering,including a 2 year stint in Belgium for Pratt & Whitney, I left the corporate world for teaching. I am now a high school math teacher at a private college prepatory school, Wilbraham & Monson Academy and loving it. I also am their varsity volleyball coach. My daughter Jeannette (13) is an 8th grader at the school and following in my footsteps as a volleyball player. My son Jack, 11, is a 6th grader who has his mom's math and science genes. I would love to hear from classmates! Homecoming is always tough to attend since it's volleyball season! -September 30, 2006

Mercedeh Mirkazemi Ward

My husband, Bruce Ward, was offered a position in Denver, Colorado, and we jumped on the chance to move out of California. Bruce works for Boeing Satellite Systems as a Sr. Staff engineer. My last position was at MGA Entertainment as Sr. Director for Girls and Preschool toys. I continue to consult for MGA from Colorado but am looking for a position in a new industry. I have worked in the toy industry now for over 20 years. I am also teaching 8th grade math to children with learning disabilities, which is a challenge in itself everyday. I tried to stay home but found it was not for me. I like working way too much! Our son, Kyle (13), and daughter, Arianna (11), have adjusted very well to their new environment and they are on the slopes every weekend snowboarding. We would love to hear from alumni who live in the Denver area. -February 22, 2006

This assignment is for 3 years, during which he will be an Assistant Professor in the ME Department. He is also the Women's Fast Pitch Club Softball coach. My wife, Dana, and I and our two children (Joseph, 9, and Kathryn, 7) have recently moved back to Massachusetts for new career opportunities. I am the Manager of Technology Development at Welch Foods, the maker of Welch's Grape Juices and Jellies. Dana is an Accounting Manager with the Fenn School, a private boys school in Concord, MA. We live in Acton, MA where Joey and Katy attend Merriam Elementary school. -October 03, 2005

Marie Harriman

I am proud to announce I will soon have a short essay published in a new book, "Cheaper Than Therapy", due out September 3, 2005. The book, edited by fiber artist Annie Modesitt, discuses the subject of joy, healing and life lessons in fiber, specifically knitting. I learned how to knit during my junior year at WPI, while an exchange student in Sweden. Since becoming disabled almost three years ago, I've had the opportunity to revist this hobby. I have incorporated the experiences of being disabled and living with a chronic illness into my essay. -August 31, 2005

Christopher Hirst

I am still working for National Starch & Chemical Co., thanks to the awesome on-campus recruiting program way back in 1987. My current job is site director for the corporate headquarters in Bridgewater, NJ. Last year I earned my private pilot license after years of being obsessed by airplanes. I am still trying to talk my wife, Suzanne, into the wisdom of buying an airplane. In my spare time, I continue as a volunteer firefighter in Kingston, NJ, now as a First Lieutenant. -April 19, 2005

Karyn Van De Mark

Karyn Van De Mark, class of '87, and Jeffrey Denker, class of '88 are proud to announce the birth of their second child, Jenna MacMillan Denker born on August 19, 2002. She joins her very proud big sister Katie, age 4 1/2. Karyn continues to work as an Associate Scientist III in the Discovery Biology Group at Biogen. In addition, her research while employed at the Cancer Center of Boston University Medical School was recently published in the Journal of Cellular Physiology (vol. 194:325-340, Feb 2003), a-Lipoic Acid induces p27kip-Dependent Cell Cycle Arrest in Non-transformed Cell Lines and Apoptosis in Tumor Cell Lines. Jeff is employed by Brooks Automation (Formerly PRI Automation) as a Principal Mechanical Engineer. -April 03, 2003

Lieutenant Colonel Rob Provost is commander of the 614th Space Intelligence Squadron, Vandenberg AFB, CA. His wife, Cindy (Lt Col, USAF), is assigned to he 30th Space Wing Plans and Programs office. Rob also runs a fly-fishing destination business, Grand Slam Fly-fishing Destinations (www.grandslamflyfishing.com), specializing in hosted fly-fishing trips to premier freshwater and saltwater destinations around the world. -September 30, 2006

Brent Goldstein M.S.C.E.'88 co-founded Goldstein - Milano LLC, a structural engineering consulting firm in Reading, MA, in 2005. He was formerly a Principal with McNamara/Salvia,Inc. in Boston. Angela Simon

Angela (Iatrou) Simon recently passed the North Carolina Unlimited Building Contractor’s Licensing Exam in order for Perini Corporation, her employer since December 2004, to pursue construction work in that state. Angela also recently became a member of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) and is a mentor to female students at WPI through the Women Industry Network (WIN) program. Angela (Iatrou) Simon

Angela (Iatrou) Simon passed the Commonweath of MA Board of Building Regulations Construction Supervisor licensing examamination. She is now qualified to manage the construction of industrial, commercial and residential buildings of up to 35,000 cubic feet. Angela also had a baby boy named Nathan Jonathan on January 19. He joins his sister Korinna (4 1/2 years old) and his brother Xander (2 1/2 yrs old). Angela and her husband of 7 years, Erik, are thrilled with Nathan's arrival. -February 24, 2004

Tony Mastromatteo and Stacey Martin Mastromatteo announce the birth of their son, Tyler Martin Mastromatteo, born December 3, 2002. Tyler weighed in at 6 lbs., 15 oz., and was 20 inches long. Tyler joins his big brother Lucas Michael Mastromatteo, who was born on June 12, 2000. Tony works as a Program Manager for NMS Communications in Framingham, MA. He is a 1988 graduate of WPI. Doug married Brenda Kurtyka (Air Force Academy '90) in February 2002. Shortly after the wedding they accepted short term assignments in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Southern Watch at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia -- she through the her job in the Air Force, and he through his project work with the MITRE Corporation. After their return to the States in the summer, they relocated to Yorktown, VA. -August 12, 2002

I am currently enjoying life in Michigan with my husband Peter, our two children Matthew (6) and Shaunna (2), and our 12 five-week-old chickens. I presently work part time at the EPA job I used to work full time and am enjoying it very much. I currently run a wholesale organic produce group in which I organize produce for 24 members. James Works

Jim Works and his wife, Karen, announce a birth. Helen Frances Works was born on Dec. 20, 2001, at 10:09 a.m. She came in at 8 lbs 8 oz and was 20.5 inches long. Her 2-year-old brother, Colin, got the baby sister he wanted for Christmas. Jim recently went back to work for the Department of Defense as an Aerospace Engineer for the Defense Contract Management Agency. He is still serving with the Connecticut Air National Guard and was recently promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. -June 14, 2002

I recently started up a research and management consulting firm, The Allen Bonde Group, in Wellesley MA, after various management and consulting roles at McKinsey, Extraprise, and the Yankee Group. Joe and Vicki Brown are proud to announce the birth of their 2nd son, Matthew Preston Brown, on Dec. 8, 2002. Joe continues to work as a research engineer for Michelin Tire Corporation. Adam Pease

Adam started Articulate Software www.articulatesoftware.com, a consultancy specializing in open sourse ontology development, in 2003. The company hired its third employee this year. Adam has also published 8 research papers this year on topics including linguistics, ontology and group collaboration. He climbed California's Mt. Shasta this year with Dave Rothkopf ('90), and will be attempting Mt. Aconcagua again in Argentina this January. -December 05, 2006

Kim and Michelle Knight are very pleased to announce the birth of their first child: a daughter, Katherine Michelle, on August 26, 2005. The family lives in a 115-year-old house in charming downtown Rochester, Michigan, and Kim and Michelle work in nearby Troy. Michelle has been an attorney at Young & Basile, specializing in intellectual property since graduation from UConn School of Law in May 2000. Fran Hoey

Since joining Tighe & Bond in 1992, Fran Hoey has been a key contributor to the firm’s success, focusing his efforts on land development, infrastructure design, and structural and geotechnical engineering. Drawing on his strong technical background, advanced computer skills, and construction management experience, he has developed innovative and cost-effective solutions to a wide array of difficult engineering challenges. He was responsible for the planning and implementation of our entry into the GIS market. A civil engineering alumnus of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Fran is an active member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Boston Society of Civil Engineers, Structural Institute, Geo-Institute and Association of State Dam Safety Officials. Fran is also the vice-chairman of Holyoke Gas & Electric, a public utility company providing gas, electricity, district steam, and telecommunications to the greater Holyoke area. Vince Matrisciano

An article in the August 2003 edition of National Defense Magazine detailed the work of Vince Matrisciano in the development of a digital fire control system for US Army mortar systems. The article explains how the project, managed by Vince, developed the system, to include software development and system integration, and fielded the system to the Army's 1st Cavalry Division in preparation for deployment to Iraq.
