Homecoming '99

The crowd cheered from Earle Bridge as the Homecoming Parade made its way through the

campus. The winning float--Sigma Pi's "Little Engineer"--portrayed a 40-foot train bearing down on longtime rival RPI. But, alas, it was WPI that was wrecked that day, 42-27, on Alumni Field.

The 22nd Annual Frank Sannella Road Race boasted three champions: former AFROTC Head Ken Stafford won the Master's Division, Rick Person '96 took the Men's, and Kim Hoffman, the Women's Division. (That's Kim, #25, and her sister Becky '99 flanking their dad, ME Professor and new Athletic Hall of Fame inductee Allen Hoffman '63.) Ray Lussier '56 was the oldest runner.

At the Donahue Rowing Center on Lake Quinsigamond, alumni welcomed Rowing Director Larry Noble and celebrated the new varsity team.

Back on campus, early morning thunder-boomers gave way to balmy sunshine, and clouds of smoke rose over the Quad as tailgaters fired up their barbecues. Fun and games were in full swing, with jugglers, live music and amusements for the children. Alumni also had a chance to catch up with professors and friends at numerous receptions and open houses.

At halftime, Matthew Denicourt '99 and Angela Malaquias '00 were recognized as Most Spirited Students, and the Skull Freshman Award was given to Kelly Jaramillo and Nikole Howard.

After the game, the freshmen yanked the sophomores over the line in the traditional Rope Pull after President Parrish fired the starting pistol. Then, the Class of 2000 made a rather unorthodox showing of the Goat's Head from the north bank of Institute Pond. (You can read the full story on the Goat's own Web page, www.wpi.edu/~goat.)

The Class of '94 celebrated its 5th reunion with a reception at Higgins House before the harmonies of the Glee Club and the standup comedy of Kathy Griffin rounded out yet another perfect Homecoming.
