Water wizardry

Reunion Plaza, dedicated last year on what was once West Street through the campus, has become a popular site for visiting, dancing (during Reunion) and listening (to summer band concerts). The 7-foot water stream is the center of attraction. Observers have seen runners passing through it, animals drinking from it, and students appreciating its ability to reduce stress.

What governs the height of the water? Plant Services Director John Miller says the fountain is controlled by an anemometer mounted on nearby Olin Hall. When the wind exceeds more than 15 miles per hour the flow is reduced by half; when it drops below that speed, water returns to its full height.
