Building to Scale

Workers assemble scaffolding on the Quadrangle side of Daniels Hall, which was completely renovated this summer as part of the third stage of a four-year, $14 million project to refurbish and modernize WPIÕs residence facilities. New plumbing, sprinkler, fire alarm and electrical distribution systems were installed, along with new windows, a new roof and new furniture in all student bedrooms and study spaces.

Plant Services also coordinated the following other recent construction projects:

Boynton Hall: the main entrances and foyer near the Admissions Office were remodeled to provide a more attractive entry point for guests and make it easier for them to find offices.

Classrooms: Stratton Hall 203 became a computer classroom for mathematics education and six other Stratton classrooms received new seating, ceilings, lighting, carpeting and window shades. Two classrooms in Salisbury Labs were renovated and new seating was installed in classrooms in Higgins Labs and Olin Hall.

Teaching and Research Labs: the chemical storage area in Goddard Hall was modernized and several laboratories were refurbished; in Salisbury Labs, air-conditioning was installed in several laboratories, a biology and biotechnology computer room was created, and two biomedical engineering labs were renovated; and facilities in Atwater Kent were expanded to support a growing research program in microelectronics.

Accessibility: push-button door openers were installed in Atwater Kent and Fuller Laboratories and in Goddard and Olin halls, and the Health Center infirmary was modified to make it more accessible to handicapped students.

The Neighborhood: Several houses WPI rents to faculty and staff were painted; one received a new roof. Steps, entrances and landscapes were improved at many of the other properties.
