Football Coach Resigns

WPI Football Coach Kevin Morris resigned in early December after an internal investigation revealed that he violated an agreement with the coach of a rival team. Morris and the coach of Worcester State College had agreed not to view tapes of the other team's scrimmages prior to a game between the two teams on Sept. 12. After that game, which WPI won 22-15, Worcester State alleged that WPI had violated the agreement.

WPI launched a thorough investigation after the close of the 1998 football season in mid-November. President Edward Alton Parrish announced on Dec. 3 that the investigation revealed that, contrary to the agreement between the two schools, a film of a Worcester State scrimmage was shown to several WPI players prior to the game. Parrish formally apologized to Worcester State and announced WPI's intention to forfeit the game. He accepted Morris' resignation the same day.

"WPI has a long tradition of scholar athletes," Parrish said. "Integrity is a key component of our educational and athletic programs. I am concerned that students were placed in a situation that was not reflective of these ideals."
