The dream, realized
In the time-lapse video shown at the dedication of the new Campus Center, the building seems to burst from the ground while an army of workers hurriedly wraps it in sheetrock, insulation and bricks--all in three minutes. In reality, of course, it took 18 months of work by 35 subcontractors to construct the 71,000-square foot structure, and nearly a century to realize the dream of having a true center for social life at WPI...

A day of firsts
The first WPI Presidential Medal was awarded to FIRST founder Dean Kamen í73 following his keynote address at a conference of math and science academies--the first time the event was held in New England....

Wireless communications scholar Kaveh Pahlavan has received the first Fulbright-Nokia Scholarship. He spent several weeks lecturing and doing research at the University of Oulu, Finland. Germano Iannacchione will use funding from an NSF award to continue his exploration of how liquid crystals change when nonrelated materials enter their environment...
