Outstanding in Their Fields

Honoring the best team players

The Physical Education and Athletics Department honored 11 student athletes at its annual awards banquet in April. The 1997-98 honorees are:

Varsity Club awards for outstanding achievement: Michael Willock, a mathematics major from Rockland, Mass., was WPI's top golfer for four years and was captain of the golf team this year. Last fall he led the team to a 13-2 record and the Little Four title; in the spring he helped WPI capture its first Engineers Cup since 1990.

Heather Mazzaccaro, a biology major from Bristol, Conn., was captain of the women's track team for two years. She was the top sprinter and javelin thrower and competed at New England Division III and ECAC meets during each of her four years at WPI.

The Percy Carpenter Award and the Patricia A. Graham Award recognize seniors for athletic ability and sportsmanship. Scott Townsend, an electrical engineering major from Hollis, Maine, received the Carpenter award. He was captain of the varsity baseball team for two years and started in 100 games in four years at shortstop and second base. This year, he led the team in runs scored and runs batted in. Connie Pappagianopoulos, of Peabody, Mass., a member of the swimming and diving team, was honored with the Graham award. Pappagianopoulos, who majored in mechanical engineering with aerospace interests, was the team's top diver this winter and lettered for four years in swimming and diving.

Poly Club awards are presented for outstanding athletic achievement, excellence in the classroom, and involvement in campus activities. The newest recipients are Michael Pockoski, a civil engineering major from Dayville, Conn., and Susan Shorrock, a biomedical engineering major from North Smithfield, R.I. Pockoski, who has a 3.96 GPA, is an All-America track and field athlete. He holds records in discus and in the 35-lb. weight throw and the hammer throw, and was an All-American in the latter two events. Shorrock has been the cross-country team's top runner for three years. She won the Tri-State Meet last fall and was recently named to the New England Women's 8 All-Academic Team for the second consecutive year.

These outstanding athletes were honored with the Leo S. Jansson Award and the Carolyn McCabe Award. The Jansson Award went to soccer player Anthony Roccisano, a biomedical engineering major from Woodstock, Conn. Roccisano played in all 30 games (and started in 29) during his first two years at WPI. This year he had two goals and two assists, helped WPI complete an 11-4 season, and was named to the Constitution Athletic Conference All-Star Second Team.

Kate Burgess of Newport, Maine, received the McCabe award. The incoming captain of the women's varsity basketball, who is also majoring in biomedical engineering, started in 21 games this winter, averaging 10.5 points per game and leading the team with 45 3-point field goals.

Nicholas Fluet, a management engineering major from Leominster, Mass., received the Charles R. McNulty Award as the outstanding male freshman athlete. A member of the varsity football team and a Freedom Football Conference Rookie of the Year, Fluet stepped into the starting lineup for the Engineers and rushed for 824 yards last fall.

Brooke Leclair of Acton, Mass., who is majoring in mechanical engineering, received the Coaches' Award. Leclair emerged as a future star as the starting goalkeeper for the women's varsity soccer team last fall. While the squad did not have a winning record, Leclair came up with many big stops to keep WPI in every game.

The John P. Coghlin Award recognizes the outstanding varsity team manager. Dawn Campanelli, a graduate student majoring in electrical engineering major from Mendon, Mass., received the award for the second year in a row. Campanelli, who received her B.S. from WPI in 1997, has been the wrestling manager for five years. Considered Coach Phil Grebinar's right arm, she has played an integral role in managing and organizing meets, making travel plans, and developing the wrestling team's home page on the Internet.
