Summer Institute for ESL

The ESL (English as a Second Language) Summer Institute at WPI, an intensive, five-week program designed for international students planning to study engineering or science in the United States, will welcome its first participants in July. Classroom instruction will integrate reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, with emphasis on the everyday use of spoken English in a technological academic setting. The program includes tutorials in technical writing, oral presentation workshops, computer workshops, World Wide Web instruction, and visits to area high-tech companies.

McGowan, who holds an M.S. in international relations from Troy State University and a graduate certificate in teaching ESL from Clark University, was hired this spring to plan and implement the summer institute. Throughout the year he will serve as an ESL resource to WPI's international students and will test and teach ESL to international teaching assistants.
