Heroic efforts

David Harvey and his Little Brother, Joe Biladeau, visit the fire lab in Higgins Labs.

David Harvey '01 of Worcester was named a Community Hero by United Way of Central Massachusetts and BankBoston for his work as a Big Brother. Harvey spends about three hours each week with his Little Brother, 12-year-old Joe Biladeau of Worcester. "We've gone fishing and he's come to WPI to see basketball and football games. He also likes to play soccer with the guys here." Last year, the "brothers" were featured in United Way's "The Power of You" ad campaign.

Harvey has been involved with the Big Brother organization since his junior year at St. John's High School in Shrewsbury, Mass. "I learned about Big Brothers about four years ago," he says. "I thought it would be a good way to give back a little bit because I have been very fortunate." Finding time for his Little Brother is never a problem for Harvey, who is a member of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and Crimson Key and who was co-captain of the freshman crew team. "I've learned a lot from Joe-as much, if not more, than he's learned from me."
